Basil Lemonade
 
 
Ingredients
  • 2 cups packed fresh basil sprigs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups cold water, divided
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice
  • Garnish: fresh basil sprigs; lemon slices
Instructions
  1. Bring basil, sugar, and 1 cup water to a boil in a medium saucepan, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Let stand at room temperature, covered, 1 hour.
  2. Strain syrup through a sieve into a serving pitcher, pressing forcefully with the back of a spoon to extract all of the liquid, then discard the solids.
  3. Add the remaining cup of water and the lemon juice to a pitcher, stirring to combine. To serve, pour into tall glasses half-filled with ice and garnish with reserved basil sprigs and lemon slices. Optional: spike each glass with a shot of gin or vodka.
